By David Morris

The latest tips to keep you healthy and happy

The prevalence of breast cancer in the USA has been highlight recently, by new figures from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which should that one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. However when the causes of the cancer were looked at, just 5-10% of cases had an heredity basis.

This is actually very good news, because it means that more than 90% of breast cancers are caused by something we do, and that means there's a great hope you can reduce the risk.

Current research shows new areas of prevention.

It could be down to natural vitamin D and sunshine

The results from a research study by Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, indicates that food sources of vitamin D and exposure to sunlight could be two of the most effective ways in reducing the risk of breast cancer.

It's a question of combing the proper foods with getting out under those gold rays of sunlight, the two together will allow your body to produce all the vitamin D it requires. Experts put this at 1,000 IU per day.

The first step is that you'll need some sun. Take the time twice a week to go out into the sunshine, were you can really expose your skin, your face, arms and even back to the sun for about 10 or 15 minutes. This will let your skin absorb the sunlight and allow it to start creating vitamin D.

The second thing you can do is to ensure your diet includes foods that are rich in vitamin D, for example mushrooms, eggs, salmon, mackerel and bee pollen. Interestingly though, while the research shows that food sources of vitamin D are effective, it's still not certain if vitamin D supplements are as effective.

And a few more things you can do that could help cut the risks of breast cancer as well as improve your overall health:

Exercise. There's no need to break out into a sweat here, a simple 30 minute walk each day is good enough. In fact it's been shown to very beneficial for your health and wellbeing, including: reducing blood pressure, reducing levels of depression and anxiety, retarding the progression of dementia and diabetes, cutting the risk of death, and also an effective was of losing weight.

Time to watch your waistline. If you're feeling that belly bulge, consider slimming down and losing a few pounds. Try adding a few super foods to your diet, like barely grass, wheatgrass and spirulina. These will strengthen your digestion and aid the elimination of toxins from the body.

Taking folic acid or vitamin B9. Your body is constantly creating new, healthy cells, and in order to do this, it needs folic acid. Folica acid can be found naturally in foods including spirulina, bee pollen and barley grass.
